Summer AC Preparation Checklist: Get Ready Before the Heat Hits

The worst time to discover your AC has a problem is the first 90°F day of summer — when every HVAC company in town is slammed and you're waiting days for service. Spring is the time to verify your cooling system is ready. This checklist covers every preparation step.

DIY Pre-Season Checklist

✅ Replace the Air Filter

Start with a fresh filter. If you haven't changed it since last fall, it's past due. For peak summer performance, use a MERV 8-11 filter — higher efficiency than the basic fiberglass, but not so restrictive that it reduces airflow.

✅ Clear the Outdoor Unit

Remove any debris that accumulated over winter — leaves, twigs, pollen buildup. Trim back any vegetation that grew within 2 feet of the unit. Gently rinse the coil fins with a garden hose to remove pollen and dirt.

✅ Check the Condensate Drain

Pour a cup of diluted bleach or distilled vinegar down the condensate drain line to kill any algae that may have grown over the winter. Check that the drain pan under your air handler is dry and clean.

✅ Test the System

Turn on the AC and run it for at least 30 minutes. Confirm that cool air is coming from vents, all rooms are receiving airflow, the outdoor unit runs continuously without tripping the breaker, and no unusual sounds are present.

✅ Check Thermostat Batteries

Replace batteries in any battery-powered thermostats. Test all thermostat modes and confirm the display and temperature response are working correctly.

✅ Inspect Ductwork for Obvious Issues

If you have access to your ductwork (in the attic, basement, or crawlspace), visually inspect for any disconnections, tears, or sections where insulation has fallen off. Address these before summer.
